Pittsburgh Calling
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette – Pittsburgh Post Gazette – Jan 31, 2008
THE MERIDIANSMembers: Erin Dragan (vocals guitar); Josh Momper (guitar keyboards vocals); Phil Norbeck (bass vocals); Chad Purnell (drums percussion). Sound: Remember Brownie Mary — popular Pittsburgh folk-rockers from the ’90s? The Meridians could be this generation’s Brownie Mary. The group has a classic rock influence with attractive female vocals and standout piano work. “I think as a band we’re most heavily influenced by Fleetwood Mac the Gin Blossoms Cream and PJ Harvey” Dragan says. “Basically rock bands that channel the blues to some extent. The allure of classic rock: “We’re all drawn to that music because frankly it was good” Dragan says. “There is something to be said for authenticity these days… “I think as a band we’re most heavily influenced by Fleetwood Mac the Gin Blossoms Cream and PJ Harvey” Dragan says. “Basically rock bands that channel the blues to some extent. The lyrics were better the song structure was better and you could tell that the singer really meant what he or she was singing. Everything’s really fabricated these days — meaning you have to look for ‘real’ artists anymore. In addition this music probably was the first rock music we ever heard as children.

These days the artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as Prince is a Jehovah’s Witness so the chances that he’ll hump the stage or simulate an orgasm with a vagina-shaped guitar aren’t as great as the chance he may have a copy of The Watchtower handy. In college several decades ago my roommate had been a piano player — a very very good piano player — and I watched and frequently chauffeured as he struggled to make a living at it in local restaurants bars and clubs. ne general pattern that emerged was that he did better at bars and clubs than he did in restaurants owing to his love of jazz and many locals’ seemingly insatiable appetites for "New York New York" and what’s now called classic rock. Plus people seemed to tip the piano player more when they got a few drinks in them. When we first arrived at the new place Peppertini’s I wondered whether the owner and kitchen would pay equal tribute to the culinary arts and the musical arts. n the music side someone plays live five nights a week so the "piano bar" claim seems valid. The artist in the kitchen is a guy named Matt Dawson riffing with things like truffle flavoring in his mashed sweet potatoes and lemongrass and ginger in his chicken soup.
