For the State Journal

And it 's kind of played in our favor in some strange way. "Even in a city that doesn 't play by the rules New rleans ' Bonerama is something different. The band can evoke vintage funk classic rock and free improvisation in the same set maybe even in the same song. The group has been repeatedly praised by Rolling Stone magazine last year for their "crushing ensemble riffing human-feedback shrieks and wah-wah growls. ""When you come to one of our shows you never know what to expect. It 's pretty exciting just the instrumentation " says Klein. Everything is amplified and made surreal with a candy counter of electronic rock effects… They 're a huge part of the culture of New rleans. If you look at our instrumentation it is sort of a brass band and we do incorporate a lot of the brass band songs and traditions. But we also like to play a lot of the classic rock songs. We like to deconstruct and rearrange them. "The group 's most recent album "Bringing It Home " features covers of The Meters George Porter Jr. The Beatles and Thelonious Monk. The eclectic mix takes some surprising turns; Bonerama 's version of Led Zeppelin 's "The cean " has trombones replacing the background vocals as well as the big guitar riff.
Stephen Malkmus: Shape-Shifting Indie Rock
NPR – Mar 28, 2008
I think Malkmus had Dylan in mind when he made his fourth solo record Real Emotional Trash. Not because it sounds much like Dylan although “We Can’t Help You” does get close for a minute there. Malkmus’ solo career has been at least in part about trying to escape the long shadow of Pavement the group he fronted in the ’90s and which — to continue the classic-rock analogies — remains the. And maybe more than anything he’s done this new recording finds Malkmus engaged in the sort of shape-shifting that made up Dylan’s career.
Why we still heed the Rolling Stones
Houston Chronicle – Mar 28, 2008
It’s no secret Scorsese has a thing for the Rolling Stones. As Wood jokes “I think this might be the first of his movies that doesn’t feature Gimme Shelter. I believe only two of his films do actually but Scorsese’s movies are second only to classic rock radio among most reliable places to hear Stones songs. Scorsese like the four principle Rolling Stones is in his 60s. Like the Stones his best work is likely behind him. Like the Stones his newer work earns goodwill because of who he is and what he “means. ” It would be delusional to compare The Departed to Taxi Driver which isn’t to say the more recent film is without creative fire.
The man behind the Phillie Phanatic
Christian Science Monitor – Mar 28, 2008
The greatest challenge is to keep the character current. So these days he surfs the Web and combs YouTube trolling for that perfect new tune or strut that great dance troupe to bring into the stadium. He quizzes his sons ? ages 12 10 and 5 ? at the dinner table about the latest schoolyard favorites: Who sings that? What are the words? How does that move go? He wants to work a little hip-hop maybe into an act that’s largely pop classic rock and Motown. Though there are baseball purists who find the antics unbecoming the game (indeed former Dodger manager Tommy Lasorda admits having “body slammed” an early Phanatic incarnation to the turf) most of what the Phanatic does is familiar and beloved stuff. A cross between Daffy Duck and Charlie Chaplin he spit-shines the bald pate of an embarrassed fan. He accidentally spills a lady’s popcorn and then when it’s replaced spills it again. He razzes visiting players mimicking their characteristic stances ever ready to tease the error-prone or the egotistical.
REM on ACL
pbs.org – Mar 28, 2008
is an Important Band. This is the 80s group that along with U2 in Europe broke the established rules of making it big following its own muse at the expense of overt careerism finding superstardom and classic rock status on its own terms. By combining its dedication to underground sounds like postpunk and the Velvet Underground with a deep love of the fertile rock noise of the 60s R. was instrumental is beginning the alternative rock revolution.
“Guitar Hero III” challenges a real rocker
Plain Dealer – cleveland.com – The Plain Dealer – cleveland.com – Mar 28, 2008
The newest version “Legends of Rock” features songs by everyone from Pat Benatar to Van Halen to the Rolling Stones to Foghat. “We’ve been told by retailers that downloads for songs and CDs increase 200 percent after appearing in the game” said Charles. “It introduces kids to classic rock songs that they might not hear or experience otherwise. ” The Huangs chose to dig into rock’s past because the songs contain riffs that are immediate and iconic. “You need a big riff and there has to be a continuous guitar going in the song; we even remix the songs so the guitar is louder” Charles said. The Sex Pistols even re-recorded “Anarchy in the UK” for the game. “The Sex Pistols actually went back into the studio for the first time since the 1970s to do it” Charles said.
