So music fans perked up when they heard about the utside Lands Festival coming to San Francisco’s naturally air-conditioned Golden Gate Park Aug. The lineup is elite but not snobby with classic-rock mainstays like Tom Petty and Steve Winwood alongside hipster favorites such as Wilco and the Black Keys. The dozens of names shown in smaller type are equally impressive: Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings Cafe Tacuba Andrew Bird Nellie McKay Bon Iver and the South Bay’s Dredg among them. Music in a park is nothing new – consider the Human Be-In of 1967 or the Tibetan Freedom Concert of ‘96 or the annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. But there’s never been anything quite as ambitious as this three-day ticketed event with performances continuing into the night. The new festival’s promoters are no rookies.
