” Not unlike the fictional band in the song the rock group Friends met in high school at Millikan High School in Long Beach part of one of the largest graduating classes of 1969. Although their origin is accurately if only coincidentally described in Adams’ opening verses the similarities stop there. Unlike the song’s band that can’t stay together Friends has played together intermittently for the last 40 years.

I never listened to My Morning Jacket until I heard the first single off this disc “I’m Amazed” and was immediately hooked. This is classic rock on a grand scale and the whole album doesn’t disappoint – mixing rock funk and a careful attention to the sometimes forgotten secret weapon in a great rock song – the hook. This is a very eclectic disc. Like the Kings of Leon My Morning Jacket has been around for some time and have finally broken through after several tries at bat. Try listening to “I’m Amazed” once and you won’t disagree. ”ELVIS CSTELL – MMFUKU.

William Chrisman 3 p. : Fresh off winning the eight-team Nelson Division of the William Jewell Holiday Classic Rock Bridge (9-0) will look to keep its record perfect against a 5-5 squad that features Illinois State signees Justin Clark and Jon Ekey. The Bears who recently completed a 1-3 road trip in San Diego for the MaxPreps Holiday Classic made a state-record 342 3-pointers last year. The Bruins have some Division I talent of their own in 6-8 Toledo commitment Jordan Dressler and 6-5 junior Ricky Kreklow. ● Hickman vs.

In between it’s been a long slow-burning climb for one of the area’s longest-running bands. Sagebrush Rock formed in late 2000 and spent the next two years “playing all the time” and “going like gangbusters” Keyser said. The band found a niche in the Central regon scene by playing classic rock and little else. They do both covers and originals that sound at home among the covers drawing from a deep pool of songs by some of rock ’n’ roll’s biggest names with a roster so extensive it reads like a dictionary: Aerosmith Boston The Cars the Doobie Brothers and so on. Sagebrush Rock rode its four vocalists to the cusp of another level of success in those early days and was set to play its biggest gig ever on Sept. “We were supposed to … open for (country star) Sara Evans at the fairgrounds” Keyser said.

The Whore Moans Hello From the Radio Wasteland! (Mt. Fuji)As soon as they rip into the bracing caterwaul of "Nerve Tonic" it’s clear that The Whore Moans are more than just this year’s snottiest kids in the room. They bring the punk all right but then witness the garage soul of "Rise and Shine" or their respectable forays into metal hardcore classic rock and prog (sometimes all in the same song!) and you’ll start to get the picture. Good humor sterling songcraft and an as-yet inexhaustible bag of tricks are these boys’ stock in trade. Head Like a Kite There Is Loud Laughter Everywhere (Mush)You could be forgiven for being distracted by the shiny surfaces of HLAK’s latest into thinking that this is just another guitar band riding the bleeps and blips bandwagon to wherever the hell it’s headed but of course you’d be wrong. The songs on Loud Laughter could have been presented on acoustic guitar accordion or goddam kazoo and they’d still be wonderful.

Although Blitzen Trapper doesn’t quite live up that standard “Furr” is still one of the year’s stronger albums. It’s yet another in the line of Sub Pop masterpieces following acts like Band of Horses Grand Archives and Sera Cahoone. n “Furr” frontman Eric Earley and the crew take us on a musical journey that encompasses classic rock and folk influences fed through modern outlook and sound. You may hear a little British Invasion and even some Southern Rock in tracks like “Sleepy Time in the Western World. “Saturday Nite” gives a taste of Bee Gees-style disco while “Fire & Fast Bullets” brings the Kinks-like garage rock but you’re more likely to hear a lot of Neil Young on “Furr. “The title track is one of the most intriguing songs of 2008.
