A traditional orchestra pops concert presents music that was popular in the 1920s ?30s and ?40s. If he draws a fan of The Beatles versus a fan of Cole Porter he?s shooting 40 years younger than the average symphony show tunes program. So within the limitations of classic rock 25 to 65 isn?t a bad range ? it actually reaches out to at least one generation that didn?t grow up with the songs of Queen Billy Joel and Led Zeppelin all of which Brennan has set to symphony arrangements. But classic rock does have its limitations. The Beatles? music gets a pop culture boost every couple of years (?Moulin Rouge? ?Across the Universe?) and pop acts such as Queen and Billy Joel have had their songs crystallized in Broadway musicals. Classic rock radio stations aren?t hard to come by and most young people could rattle off a dozen Motown songs without realizing they knew them. Here?s the thing: Fewer young people could rattle off a dozen Broadway or jazz standards.
