The Inevitable Evolution f Rock Music

After four decades though holding fast to a backward-looking view of popular culture is silly. Appreciating the past is one thing; living in it is quite another. Yet the boomer agenda still defines the Zeitgeist at least in music through ubiquitous classic-rock radio stations and dinosaur-band concert tours. There’s no mystery why: That’s what boomers want and they’re willing to pay for it. But pop culture is meant to evolve and plenty has happened since the ’60s — despite assertions to the contrary from generational navel-gazers who are certain that rock reached its apex in a muddy field in upstate.

classicrockmagazine. When asked what the future holds for KISS Stanley replied “It looks like we’ll be touring Europe as well as the States next year. You’ll be getting more of what you saw at the Download festival this past summer ? the ‘KISS Alive!’ vibe amped up to the max. There might even be a new KISS album at some point. I have been ambivalent to the idea in the past but I’m much more open to it now.
Margaret Hair: Bringing youths to classical music

A traditional orchestra pops concert presents music that was popular in the 1920s ?30s and ?40s. If he draws a fan of The Beatles versus a fan of Cole Porter he?s shooting 40 years younger than the average symphony show tunes program. So within the limitations of classic rock 25 to 65 isn?t a bad range ? it actually reaches out to at least one generation that didn?t grow up with the songs of Queen Billy Joel and Led Zeppelin all of which Brennan has set to symphony arrangements. But classic rock does have its limitations. The Beatles? music gets a pop culture boost every couple of years (?Moulin Rouge? ?Across the Universe?) and pop acts such as Queen and Billy Joel have had their songs crystallized in Broadway musicals. Classic rock radio stations aren?t hard to come by and most young people could rattle off a dozen Motown songs without realizing they knew them. Here?s the thing: Fewer young people could rattle off a dozen Broadway or jazz standards.
Defining rock ‘n’ roll
Louisville Courier-Journal KY
“The band’s song list includes Elvis Presley’s “That’s All Right Mama” Bruce Springsteen’s “Thunder Road” the Rolling Stones’ “Street Fighting Man” The Clash’s “London Calling” The Rollins Band’s “Low Self pinion” XTC’s “Earn Enough for Us” and more. During a recent rehearsal at Actors Hanbury’s voice purred and growled in a satisfying Springsteen way during “Thunder Road” although the theater’s band is without the distinctive saxophone sound of Clarence Clemons. In addition to live music the show tells true stories about the personal impact of rock ‘n’ roll while it follows a fictional Lansing Mich. group that becomes hugely popular as a wedding band then breaks up and reunites — the classic rock band story. The idea for the show arose last year during the production of “Hedwig” directed by Actors associate director Sean Daniels. That collaboration with Hanbury and musician Jon Spurney gave birth to the project whose creators also include Actors dramaturge Julie Felise Dubiner and sound designer Matt Callahan. The first success came when Springsteen’s people gave permission for the use of “Thunder Road” in a scene involving a letter from a father to his daughter about his admiration for Springsteen’s music.
