The rock poster reinvented
Los Angeles Times CA -
By Scott Timberg February 22 2009Reporting from akland — Four decades ago Bay Area artists filled their posters with raging flames extravagant skeletons and bare engorged breasts. This overstuffed style became the visual symbol not only for many late-’60s English and American bands but also a recognizable signature of the entire psychedelic era. When graphic artist Jason Munn sat down in his studio just across the bay from the old Fillmore West to design a poster for Portland indie rockers the Decemberists he did not conceive flames or naked women. He thought of the bold geometric design of a midcentury Czech matchbox adding the fine lines of a bicycle wheel and pine tree that suggested the group’s regon roots.

Rokafonik Philharmonik

So last February he decided to start holding auditions to find the brightest young student musicians around and give them the opportunity to perform in a band with their peers. Since many of the students are juniors and seniors in high school Rokafonik also gives them the chance to feel what performing in a professional setting is like before they head off to college and choose their majors. Rokafonik began rehearsing last June drawing from the deep pool of complex classic rock tunes of the ΄70s and ΄80s. Greenberg says he chose classic rock as the theme because it’s challenging enough to keep the student’s interest but also fun to play. And since the members of the band play both conventional and unconventional instruments Greenberg worked with the students to tailoring songs like Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” or Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall” to fit their set up. “Any instrument can be an outlet for rock” says Greenberg. “We’ve experimented with things like putting a clarinet through an effects pedal.

tmpl –> What has it meant to subscribers who’ve been paying about $13 a month for one or the other and who have favorite channels ranging from Howard Stern the Grateful Dead and NFL Football on Sirius to Bob Dylan Tom Petty and Major League Baseball (all year round) on XM? Do all the biggest names stay? Since both services had oldies and classic-rock stations which ones survived? Is there now one program lineup that all subscribers get? What about pricing? When Mel Karmazin chief executive officer of Sirius was campaigning for governmental approval of the merger he promised that subscribers would get more programming choices and lower prices. And what about Sirius XM’s chances for survival? The company has been reported to be preparing for a possible filing for Chapter 11 protection from creditors. Boy as Roseanne Roseannadanna used to say you do ask a lot of stupid questions! I do. But I also have some answers thanks to Scott Greenstein chief content officer at Sirius XM. First Sirius and XM remain separate services but their lineups have changed.

Listeners can tell when a new fish enters the range what kind of fish he is and in what direction he’s moving. Eventually participants will be able to choose their favorite type of music. Bluegrass anyone? Jazz? Classic rock? The Accessible Aquarium project is an example of collaboration among several disciplines at Georgia Tech. Bruce Walker an associate professor in the School of Psychology and the School of Interactive Computing is heading the aquarium team. His research focuses on ways to use sound to convey information an interest he developed while working for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Astronauts can’t always sit in front of a control panel he said so engineers had to find ways to transmit numbers and data to people who aren’t watching a computer screen. The answer? Transforming visual information into sound.
