Classic Rock Rewind: Appreciating “Jethro Tull”

You do not attain that kind of album sales by being a flash-in-the-pan band. Far from it Jethro Tull is a band that has been redefining their sound from the early sixties to today. They have been filed under the categories of “hard rock” “classic rock” “progressive rock” and they even had years where they experimented with the electronic sound as well. This is a band that deserves in the very least commendation for being innovative in their field. Jethro Tull is certainly not a stagnant one-trick-pony of a band. After all when is the last time James Hetfield of Metallica picked up a mandolin?Granted Jethro Tull has not released an album since 2003 (and it was “Christmas” album by the way) but a band with such a long history in the rock music scene should be respected for their contributions to the art form. It is okay to like them.

In fact the words "punk" and "evolution" seem almost antithetical. The Clash brilliantly demonstrated how far a band could successfully take the form with London Calling (basically a classic rock ‘n’ roll album when push comes to shove) — but then quickly lost the plot with misguided ambition on Sandinista! and Combat Rock. And yet the members of Green Day have never been anything but ambitious. f course many would argue the trio hasn’t been a "punk" band in years even if they’ve remained essentially true to the ethos of Gilman Street which was almost like a latter-day Northern California hippie scene in its sense of community and the way the kids there tried to take care of one another (which is one of the major themes on the band’s latest release). There are still many elements of an exciting classic punk sound in their music — which is why they remain one of the most thrilling live rock bands of our time. But Green Day is also a great power-pop and classic rock band in 2009.

Make that a classic-rock weekend. The sights as well as the sounds of the rock and pop music of the 1960s and ’70s will dominate the July Fourth holiday party in AyCee as an art exhibit dedicated to the artists of the era as well as a slew of performers themselves are on tap. Resorts Atlantic City is the site of the Classic Rock Art Show a three-day visual extravaganza that is part of the casino’s summer-long Boogie Nights Rock and Pop Art Gallery. According to creator-producer Scott Segelbaum of Blue Bell the art show features some 200 pieces.
