Green Day certainly delighted the near capacity Phoenix crowd but the bloated six-man version of the Berkeley band we saw for much of the two-plus hour concert struck me as oddly similar to what you’ll see at a Lynyrd Skynyrd show these days where a lone original member playing rhythm guitar is the only thing standing between the “genuine” article and a tribute band with intellectual property rights. Not that Green Day’s show was bad. I can’t say for sure that Green Day are the only truly great DIY scene punk act to successfully transform themselves into respected classic rockers though they’ve got to be on a short list. But to say the band we saw — setting off enough pyrotechnics to shame Ted Nugent shooting a spirit squad style t-shirt launcher and making at least 30 pandering mentions to “Phoenix Arizona” — bears any resemblance to the one that played. Green Day is now Poison if Poison had more than four good songs.

It changed the face of popular music” said Matt Ross CE of The Paul Green School of Rock Music. “With these shows” Ross said “we were in a position to have our students give back to their parents and the community the classic rock music that they grew up with. “The Paul Green School of Rock Music the performance-based rock music school for 7- to 18-year-olds was founded in 1998 by Green in Philadelphia. The school was the inspiration for the 2003 film “The School of Rock. ” It also served as the subject for the 2005 documentary “Rock School” and its students are featured in the “Woodstock: Now and Then” documentary which premiered Friday on VH1 on and will air on the History Channel tonight. It’s believed to be one of only a dozen produced. A 1979 T-shirt immortalizes the New Barbarians a band that featured Stones Ronnie Wood and Keith Richards; the group formed toured and disbanded within the space of a year. Updated versions of classic rock T-shirts – tops with the CBGB or Rolling Stones tongue logo are two prime examples – remain popular and tour shirts are ubiquitous at any music show.

You may not consider Coldplay classic rock. Give it time and it is a guarantee that their music will be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. If that does not qualify as “classic” rock then monikers mean nothing in the first place. Bands emulate them but there are very few artists that can touch the kind of stratospheric rise to rock prominence that Coldplay has attained in such a short period of time. In case you care about significance it’s hidden under the shell of Reinhold Mack’s luxurious hard-candy production. The record turned out well but Meteor almost didn’t get made at all. The Shazam’s last collection 2002’s Tomorrow the World continued the British-American pop sound of their early efforts and was cut with Nashville producer Brad Jones.

This year I’m that fan. Nothing about this year’s lineup is cutting-edge and that’s sort of the point: It has such a strong populist appeal that I can’t help but get excited over a few of the acts. Some of it is nostalgia-based but most of my enthusiasm stems from the power of a good classic rock song. There is plenty to enjoy at this year’s fair—just leave your detached irony and disdain for all things popular at the door cool guy. Take Blue Öyster Cult. BC will be forever linked to Will Ferrell whose turn as the band’s cowbell player in a 2000 Saturday Night Live skit managed to both revive interest in the band and not-so-subtly poke fun at them. Yet there was nothing funny about BC in the mid-’70s when the band kicked serious ass.
